Earlier in the year I took my mum to London to celebrate her birthday and mothers day and treated her to an array of surprises over the weekend. You can see what we got up to in the two previous posts. I will admit that this weekend took place quite some time ago now, but I just felt I couldn’t leave out afternoon tea!
My mum and I had just enjoyed a trip to columbia road flower market that day so we were loaded up with camellias, tulips, pansies and a plethora of various other plants that caught my mums eye. The london underground journey was far from peaceful and we spent much of the time trying not to dangle disordely leaves into a sitting passengers face! Our destination was Number twelve restaurant at the Ambassadors Bloomsbury in Kings Cross. It really was a welcoming sight as we departed the pouring rain, put down the cumbersome garden and swiftly ordered two pots of tea. The afternoon tea normally costs £22 per person but I purchased a deal on Wowcher.co.uk (sshhhh) for £22 for two which was a marvellous deal! Mother and I are afternoon tea devotees so this was a perfect – and quintessentially British – way to finish off the weekend.
The tea was served in clear, minimalist tea pots suggesting a contemporary afternoon tea was to follow. The finger sandwiches arrived on a plate with a scrumptious selection of fillings such as pickled cucumber, sherry vinegar and black pepper, salt beef and smoked salmon. The rest of the meal was served on a tiered cake stand that looked as though it was fresh out of New York apartment.
There was of course the obligatory scones with devonshire clotted cream and strawberry and raspberry preserve which were soon gone! The tier above displayed indulgent saccharine delights such as fruit tartlets, cupcakes, fruit cake and chocolate dipped strawberries. Whilst I enjoyed the refreshing take on afternoon tea, I personally prefer the more traditional version, with clinking tea cups.
As we sipped Earl Grey and emptied the tiered stand we discussed how wonderful the weekend had been. I felt extremely proud that I had organised so many treats, kept all of them a surprise and essentially created a memory that my mum and I will always treasure. As we made our way back to mine we stopped to absorb the city and snap some final photos. London can sometimes be a hectic and stressful place to live, but as I watched Big Ben glow in the darkening sky I couldn’t help but feel so appreciative towards my new home, for offering so many wonderful moments that weekend.
